Many companies have mission confusion.
Allow me to explain. They will often confuse what they do for why they do it. Those are two completely different things.
For years, the Walt Disney Company’s mission statement was simple: “To make people happy.” How did they do it?
Movies. Amusement parks. Toys. Resorts. Character meet and greets.
Their mission statement was a filter that forced them to ask, “If we do this, will it make people happy?” As a result, Disney would often say “no” to good ideas. Not because it wouldn’t make money or advance the product, but because it didn’t further the mission of the company.
A company’s mission is why they do what they do. It’s your purpose and it drives everything. It’s like a pair of glasses that you wear, and you see every opportunity and interaction through those glasses.
