What to do when Leadership Feels Isolating

This post explores the silent burden of leadership through a poignant quote from President Truman: “This is a lonesome place.” Written to his wife, the line highlights the emotional isolation leaders often face. From historical figures like Truman and Shackleton to modern-day leaders, the message is clear: leadership demands tough decisions that can lead to deep loneliness. But it doesn’t have to stay that way. The piece offers practical guidance: confide in loved ones, talk to a therapist, find community, and nurture interests outside of work. The loneliness is real, but so is the impact. And the dream you’re building is worth the price.

“This is a lonesome place.”

Just five words.

President Truman wrote them to his wife, Bess.

She often returned home to Missouri, leaving him behind in Washington, D.C.

He was telling her he missed her—but there’s more behind that sentence.

Leadership is lonely.

British explorer Ernest Shackleton once said, “Loneliness is the penalty of leadership.”

He was right. Truman would have agreed.

Some decisions only a president can make.

And some consequences only a president can bear.

Truman made choices about war, his generals, the economy, and how to work with Congress. Each decision, no matter how right, risked isolating him from someone.

That’s the cost of leadership.

So what can we do?

We still need connection. We can't sail this sea of life alone.

If you have a significant other, talk to them. Tell them everything.

No partner? Confide in a close friend. Hire a therapist. Be upfront - you need a sounding board.

And don’t just talk about work.

Live outside of it.

Read. Walk. Travel. Get a hobby.

Don’t let the weight of your calling push you into despair.

Yes, leadership is a lonesome place.

But it’s worth it.

Seeing others thrive because of your guidance - that makes the burden meaningful.

Take heart. What you’re feeling isn’t new. Every leader before you has felt the same.

Find a mentor. Join a local group of leaders.

Let them help carry the load.

Don’t let loneliness steal your dream.

The goal is worth the price.
